In keeping with Cinequest's theme this year of "discovery," Eden Court is the first film of Paul Leuer. It shows in several ways. While a charming story, there are several big plot holes. Miscommunication is a common comedy element. Eden Court stretches this element a bit thin. One thing I enjoyed, was Thomas Lennon's performance as washed up, floundering husband, Shroeder. I've seen his work on Reno 911, and feared that it would be difficult for him to transit to film. Amazingly, I didn't recognize him at first. He traded Deputy Dangle's bad highlights and short shorts uniform for a normal haircut and clothes. Dressed in street clothes, Lennon looked very much the part of an "every man." Even though his character was written a bit one-dimensionally, I felt the despair and frustration keenly through Lennon's performance. Well done. As a whole, the premise and story were a bit flat. However, the actors did well with the material given.
