Exterior California theaterThis year's festival logo

As expected, opening night was packed. We managed to get seats toward the front. The economy seems to be recovering, if you judge by the number and variety of sponsors this year. Last year was fairly sparse. I'm happy to see that more companies are again able to appreciate and assist this fabulous film festival.

The Cinequest credits trailer that they run at the front of every film is the same cute animation they showed off at the media launch. It blithely ignores the annoying, incorrect usage of the term "maverick" by the media in the past couple of years to entertainingly remind us what the word really means.

I found the SanDisk cellphone movie competition entries quite interesting. Unfortunately, you need a cellphone with a SanDisk memory card to vote for a winner. This is not compelling enough for me to change smartphones, so they will have to live without my vote.

Vera Wang has another new set of HP netbook designs out, which several Wang clad models displayed. Designer computers are a good way to dress up a plain-looking machine if you are unable or too busy to do it yourself.

Packed house at E&O Trading
The after party was as fabulous and crowded as I expected. E & O Trading makes some tasty food and is a really fun space for the party. Unfortunately, green papaya salad doesn't agree with me, so I was limited to the tiny teriyaki shitake bites. I did score a vodka cranberry cocktail, so the evening was still fruitful.

I am looking forward to seeing a lot of films, on which I hope to share my thoughts. Again, I found it useful to use Festival Fanatic to help me prioritize and schedule what to see, and when. Hope to see you there!
